About the Artist

Lovis Corinth, [Franz Heinrich Louis Corinth], Germany, (1858-1925). Lovis Corinth was a painter, printer and etcher.

He was born in the East Prussian town of Tapiau, and studied at the Königsberg Art Academy, the Königsberg and the Académie Julian in Paris. Moving to Berlin he adopted “Lovis” as his painting name.

Corinth was a founder of the Munich and later the Berlin Secession movements. He developed his own synthesis of impressionism and expressionism and was an important precursor and pioneer of German modernism.
