About the Artist
Pietro Aquila (1650-1692) was an Italian engraver, etcher, painter, printmaker and draughtsman. Aquila was a highly regarded engraver and etcher of designs after old master painters and his contemporaries.
Most of his etchings were done in Rome, including suites after Annibale Carracci’s paintings for the Palazzo Farnese, the Raphael frescoes in the Vatican Loggie, and work after Pietro da Cortona and Cirro Ferri. His best prints are those he engraved after the Carracci, which are very highly esteemed. [DES-01/11]
