About the Artist

Pierre Bonnard, French, (1867 — 1947). In art school Pierre Bonnard formed friendships that would later develop into the core of the Les Nabis’ art movement (1891-1899) - Ker Xavier Roussel, Felix Vallotton, Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. The Nabis were a group of Post-Impressionist artists and illustrators in Paris and became very influential in the field of graphic art.

Bonnard’s individual painting style developed under a strong influence of Japanese prints and impressionism and was characterized by dazzling light and an enriched color palette. Nudes, landscapes and interior views were the common themes of much of Bonnard’s work. Most of these works can be described as personal, intimate and tranquil. He also designed furniture and textiles, screens and stage sets, made puppets for puppet shows and illustrated books.
