Editor’s Note:

The original painting on which this engraving is based hangs in the Church of St. Francesco della Vigna in Venice. It was painted by the Italian artist Paolo Veronese, (1528 - 1588) in 1551.

About the Artist

Agostino Carracci, Italy, (1557 — 1602). Agostino Carracci was an Italian painter, engraver, and etcher. Originally a goldsmith, he later studied printmaking and became a master of engraving. Carracci introduced what is called “the large style,” where the lines of his plates were broadly and boldly laid.

Carracci’s plates were freely and beautifully executed, and he was able to instill detailed expression on all his faces of his subjects. His influence in the art of engraving was felt far beyond the bounds of Italy, and his technique with the graver was widely imitated.
