Clarence Gagnon, Canadian, (1881 — 1942). Born in Quebec, Gagnon studied first in
Montréal under William Brymner and then at the Academie Julian, Paris, with the painter
Jean-Paul Laurens.
Gagnon first achieved fame for his engravings. Later in his career he devoted himself to
paintings the daily life of Habitants - farmers of French descent or origin throughout the
Province of Quebec. He became a member of the Royal Society of Canada and later he was
elected associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
The actual lines of a pig (I mean a really fat pig) are among the loveliest and most luxuriant in nature; the pig has the same great curves, swift and yet heavy, which we see in rushing water or in a rolling cloud.
