William Ewart (W.E.) Lockhart, (1846-1900), British. Though he suffered from ill health all his life, Lockhart was a skilled and prolific painter of portraits, landscapes and genre scenes.
Lockhart, fascinated by Spain and all things Spanish, made several journeys to that country. Spanish themes were common in his works. He painted the Spanish landscape and its people and also drew inspiration from its history and literature.
Lockhart is best known for his painting of the Royal Family, 'The Jubilee Celebration in Westminster Abbey, June 21, 1887' (1889-90), commissioned by her Magisty the Queen and now in the Royal Collection.
