• The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud commented on this drawing: "More suggestively than all the explanations in the world, a well-known print by Félicien Rops illustrates this little noticed fact, one which, however, is worthy of the keenest attention: the artist has represented the type case of repression in saints and penitents."

About the Artist

Félicien Rops, Belgian, (1833 — 1898). Rops was a Belgian–born painter, etcher, and lithographer who spent the heights of his artistic career in France, mainly in Paris. Rops developed a reputation as an illustrator with an unusual imagination and an artist of great technical skill.

Today Rops is best known for the erotic nature of his work and his pictorial explorations into the world of vice. Women of all classes and all activities are present in a great part of his work.
