About the Artist

Clarence Gagnon, Canadian, (1881-1942). Born in Quebec, Gagnon studied first in Montréal under William Brymner and then at the Academie Julian, Paris, with the painter Jean-Paul Laurens.

Gagnon first achieved fame for his engravings. Later in his career he devoted himself to paintings the daily life of Habitants – farmers of French descent or origin throughout the Province of Quebec. He became a member of the Royal Society of Canada and later he was elected associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
