About the Artist:

Émile-Antoine Bayard (1837-1891), was a French painter, illustrator and draftsman. He published first cartoons at the age of fifteen later working in charcoal, oils, water colors, woodcuts, engravings, and lithographs. By 1864 Bayard was working primarily for magazines, and illustrated current events, such as the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.

Later Bayard illustrated novels, including Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, Robinson Crusoé by Daniel De Foë, and From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne.

Bayard ‘s illustration of Cosette from Les Misérables was adapted for the logo from the Cameron Mackintosh musical. And Bayard’s artwork for From the Earth to the Moon is considered among the first space art of a true scientific nature. [DES-01/16]
