About the Artist
James Earl Taylor, United States, (1839-1901). James Earl Taylor was a battlefront artist working for various magazines published by Frank Leslie during the American Civil War. His newspaper illustrations — early photo-journalism — served to popularize stereotypes of the Civil War and America’s western frontier during the post-Civil War years.
During this period, the American public hungered for “authentic” images from the Civil War, the American West and from around the globe, and Taylor’s drawings had an immense impact on the public imagination.
