About the Artist:

Jane Poupelet (1878-1932) was a French sculptor. She studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and at the Académie Julian and was the only female member of Rodin’s bande à Schnegg.

The National Society of Fine Arts offered her a grant after she displayed at the Salon and she spent the money on a trip studying sculpture in countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. She became Vice President of the Salon des Independants and encouraged many modern artists.

Poupelet created hardy animals and female nudes in soft and sleek shapes and worked towards beauty in simplicity. Ill after 1925, she made ​​her last sculpture, “Imploration” and then devoted herself to graphic work until her death. [DES-02/16]
