About the Artist

Leonora Carrington, British, (b. 1917). Leonora Carrington is a renowned surrealist artist. She has enjoyed a distinguished career as painter, printmaker, sculptor, novelist, playwright and short-story writer.

Carrington’s works are luminous and finely detailed. Strange creatures, human, animal and mythological, inhabit landscapes and interior spaces, where they perform rituals of magic, incantation, transformation and regeneration.

Her art portrays a fantastic world, yet it seems eerily familiar. Themes focus on the magical, the mystical and the mysterious. Carrington presents her vision of the world and allows the viewer to enter, where she deftly constructs scenarios that encourage a suspension of disbelief, a move to a dreamlike state.

Present at the beginning of the international Surrealist movement in the 1930s, Carrington’s career has taken her from a childhood in England to involvement with the surrealists in Paris to a mature career in Mexico City, where she currently resides. She is revered as one of the living masters of contemporary art and known throughout the world as one of the main pillars of surrealism.
