  • Editor’s Note:

I was intrigued by the expression on Circe’s face. She seemed pensive, bewildered , frustrated… Sitting alone with a bunch of pigs and thinking, “Well, now what?” I was reminded of Jack Gilbert’s poem “The Plundering of Circe” which begins:

Circe had no pleasure in pigs.
    Pigs, wolves, nor fawning
lions. She sang in our language
    and, beautiful, waited for quality.
