About the Artist

William Heath Robinson, signed as W. Heath Robinson, (1872-1944) was a British cartoonist and book illustrator and the author/illustrator of two children’s books. Robinson is best known for drawings of eccentric machines and unnecessarily complex and implausible contraptions.

In Britain, from about the time of the First World War, the term “Heath Robinson” entered the language as a general description for a complex and implausible machine or invention that achieved absurdly simple results, similar to a “Rube Goldberg” apparatus in the U.S. [DES-04/11]
