About the Artist

Willem Vrelant, Flemish, (fl.1445-1481; d.1481). Willem Vrelant was an influential and commercially successful illuminator working in Bruges during the third quarter of the 1400s.

Vrelant’s distinctive style of illumination was conservative for the time, relying on heavy black contours to outline his static figures. He used intense primary colors along with gold for highlights.
