The necessity of nutrition… Pig or man, nothing is more interesting than those things that we eat. But while idealism – perfection, utopia, beauty, etc. – is food for the soul, a different mind-set is required to feed our bodies. Our appetites can have ideals, yes, but compromise, workability, and the pragmatism of necessity often play the major role.

A pig’s imagination in the realm of food is never visionary, merely a matter of pragmatism. Thus, no pig, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, would also conclude that it would make better soup.
