Rural life depends on independence, but within an interdependent community. Every act eventually proves itself to be hitched to everything else, and self-sufficiency is only a virtue if it is shared.

A man and a woman are one. A man and a woman and a pig approach oneness. And yet, simultaneously, they are of three minds, self-sufficient yet interdependent, like a sty in which there are three shrewd sows.
