About the Artist

John Singer Sargent, United States, (1856-1925). John Singer Sargent was raised in Europe by an American expatriate family and attended art schools in Paris. He was able to assimilated lessons from the old masters, the contemporary Impressionists and the Spanish painters Velázquez and Goya.

Sargent achieved a great reputation for his portraits, becoming one of the great portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sargent was also a great generalist painter as he had mastered many different painting styles . In later life he turned to Impressionism, landscapes, watercolors and even public art murals.
