Leadbeater, Neil

England, (b. 1951)

THE BRITISH LOP

  1. I think of you in Birdlip, Boxwell and Bisley –
  2. how you made a name for yourself
  3. with those long dangling ears.
  4. No wonder we christened you ‘Floppy’
  5. not in a droopy, flabby way
  6. but to lure you back with pig-chatter
  7. to acorns at our feet.

THE GLOUCESTER OLD SPOTS

  1. One spot was all we needed
  2. to accept you into the Registry.
  3. Welcome to our books.
  4. We are glad we spotted you –
  5. your good mothering ability
  6. that is – your docility too.
  7. We know you won’t blot your
  8. copybook. The neat entry
  9. in copperplate
  10. is proof enough of that.

THE SADDLEBACK

  1. We called you ‘igpay’ in Pig Latin,
  2. ‘pig lily’ the Lily of the Nile,
  3. as we shoveled your feed
  4. into the trough
  5. and watched you muster
  6. on the saddle-shaped hill
  7. your flared nostrils
  8. sensing the sustenance
  9. of kitchen waste –
  10. a meal fit for a King.

THE TAMWORTH

  1. Between Polesworth and Lichfield
  2. these ginger-coated animals
  3. are never far from the trough.
  4. Their thoughts do not stray
  5. to receptacles for kneading,
  6. brewing or tanning, to channels,
  7. gutters or conduits,
  8. hollows between wave crests
  9. or elongated areas
  10. of low atmospheric pressure.
  11. They only think of bread.

These four poems are all © Neil Leadbeater. Reading between the Lines. Sudbury, Suffolk, UK: Littoral Press (2020).

Editor’s Note:

Neil Leadbeater is a friend of Porkopolis.org. I appreciate his overture that I might include these four poems in the Best Loved Pig Poetry section of Porkopolis.org.

And while I skirmish with my own fates and devils on cold Ohio winter nights, I’m gladdened to recall that a worthy poet-at-arms such as Neil has accepted the challenge of bolstering our grip on our language history. Thank you, good sir!
