The Pig in the Morning

  1. The pig in the morning, when I queue
  2. on the road to work, knows better than me.
  3. She knows the bell-like sway of her saggy
  4. teats as she trots from the slop bucket to
  5. the gate. Her raised snout sniffs that slack brew:
  6. the swill, the mud, her dung, the scummy
  7. water. It smells like happiness, this simplicity,
  8. though I can’t judge. All I know is my view
  9. of her pink and black patched size, her weight,
  10. the stocky dance of her steps by the fence,
  11. the pennants of her ears tapping her fat
  12. noble head. So much for my reliance
  13. on wages, work, these wheels, not being late.
  14. Her bum and belly lumber. Her jowls bounce.
