Louis Apol, Dutch, (1850-1936). Louis Francis Henri Apol is considered one of the minor masters of the Hague school.

Apol was a specialist in winter landscapes, where he broke with a Dutch tradition of filling winter landscapes with human figures, especially skaters. Devoid of figures, Apol’s landscapes emphasized the desolate atmosphere of his interpretation of winter.

The majority of Apol’s landscapes, regardless of the season, are devoid of figures; and when they are present they are subordinate to the mood overall. The pigs Apol depicted here look far too preoccupied with rooting to be subordinate…
